Battery voltage is another important consideration, which should meet the power requirements of the trolling motor. Typically, trolling motors use 12v, 24v, or 36v batteries, depending on their power requirements. Using a battery with the incorrect voltage may damage the motor or reduce its efficiency.

 

How Boat Size and Weight Affects Battery Size Selection?

The size and weight of the boat must be considered when selecting a trolling motor battery size. Larger boats require larger batteries with higher amp-hour (Ah) ratings in order to provide enough power for the trolling motor to run longer.
Battery size is also affected by the thrust generated by the trolling motor. The higher the thrust, the more power the motor requires, so a larger battery is needed to provide the necessary energy.

Typically, trolling motors with a thrust of 55 pounds or less require a 12V battery system. When you upgrade to a more powerful motor (rated up to 80 pounds of thrust), you may need a 24V battery system. For the most powerful trolling motors, producing more than 80 pounds of thrust, a 36V battery system is usually required.
